I received an email yesterday afternoon…and then my head exploded. After I cleaned up the mess, I did some very cursory research and realized I couldn’t let this head-exploding email lie (literally). So off to my blog I go!
It was of course a well-worn (digitally) forward email. Most of the time I give these emails a cursory glance, realize they are fake, delete it and move on. This one though, caught my attention because it actually had a snopes.com link at the top ‘proving’ its validity. So I read the email, and the read the snopes.com link…and seriously, my head exploded. I don’t even really know where to start, because there’s so much falseness in one little innocuous email, but hang on, cause here we go…
The title of the email was “Muslim Day Of Prayer @ White House 9-25-09″ (omg that’s today! we are doomed…dooooooooooomed I tell you!!). It opens right away with “I checked this at snopes. It is true!” and then provides the link to the snopes article supposedly ‘proving’ that Obama is having a big old revival, at the White House, with a bunch of terrorists Muslims, today. The email then launches into a prayer-based bought of handwringing of the state of our nation. The meat of the email being this:
In June 2007, Presidential candidate Barack Obama declares the USA no longer a Christian nation.
In 1952 President Truman established one day a year as a National Day of Prayer.
In 1988, President Reagan designated the first Thursday in May of each year as the National Day of Prayer.
This year however, President Obama, decided to cancel the ceremony at the White House not wanting to offend anyone.
On September 25, 2009 from 4am until 7pm, a National Day of Prayer for the Muslim religion will be held on Capitol Hill, beside the White House. As a Christian, it makes me really wonder where the REAL direction of this country is headed.
Can you spot the inaccuracies in that statement? I sure can. There’s a few.
Let’s start with the National Day of Prayer. Yes, Truman did sign a proclamation that there be a NDP in 1952, yes Reagan did declare that day to be the first Thursday in May, and yes, Obama did cancel the White House ‘ceremony’ for National Day of Prayer, but he did NOT cancel the National Day of Prayer itself. We still had an NDP, complete with a Presidential proclamation on that day. Why did he cancel the White House ceremony? Because of what it has become: A political soapbox for religious right activist groups such as Focus on the Family and the like. Unlike George W. Bush, Obama didn’t feel it proper to open up the White House to the self-appointed National Day of Prayer Task Force, which has hosted exclusive events for the last eight years. Christianity is not the only religion in the US, and Obama felt that the day of prayer is a necessary event that should just be recognized and proclaimed but not have events held at the White House. Since 1952 most presidents have limited their recognition of NDP by simply signing a proclamation just like Obama, except for Bush Sr. and Reagan who each held one event during their presidencies. George W. Bush is the only president to hold events on the NDP every year of his presidency. So, strictly speaking, what Bush did was unprecedented, not Obama.
Now let’s move on to the “Obama declares the US no longer a Christian nation” comment, because I really can’t let that one lie. We are not by any means a “Christian Nation”. We never have been. We were founded under the premise of freedom OF religion, meaning peoples of the US would be allowed to worship as they saw fit. Our founding father’s purpose was to avoid a “Church State” or “State Church” allowing all people to worship, or not, as they chose with no Government interference as to how or to who. Though a majority were Episcopalian, not even all our founding fathers were Christian, and quite a few were having a crisis of faith during the time of American independence from British tyranny. To declare the US a Christan Nation goes against the very principles that our country was founded on.
As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…
-Treaty of Tripoli, 1797
Finally we’re on to today’s Muslim Day of Prayer “at the White House”. According to the title of the head-exploding email, Obama invited these terrorists Muslims right into the White House, and is fully responsible for both initiating the event and planning it. But even the head-exploding email later contradicts itself and says the terrorists Muslims will be at the US Capital today. So which is it, and what’s actually going on? Well, hey…guess what…there’s a source that tells you exactly what is going on today, and the link was even right there in the head-exploding email. If you actually take the time to click the snopes.com link (go, do it…I’ll wait…) and read it (ok, now read it…I’ll wait…), you find out that the body of the email itself is a bold faced lie. Yes, There will be a Muslim Day of Prayer at the US Capital (not the White House) today, all day. But, they were not invited by Obama, nor will he even be there (he happens to be at the G-20 today, speaking). This event has been organized by a US citizen named Hassen Abdellah, who just happens to be a Muslim. He is quoted in a Washington post article as saying:
“This is not a protest. Never has the Islamic community prayed on Capitol Hill for the soul of America. We’re Americans. We need to change the face of Islam so people don’t feel every Muslim believes America is ‘the great Satan,’ because we love America.” (emphasis mine)
They are doing what any group of people in the US is allowed to do, gathering on public grounds at the US Capital building to hold a prayer meeting of like minded individuals. They don’t mean any harm, its not even meant to be a political event. This group just happens to be Muslim…which scares people. Even though not all Muslims are terrorists, and not all terrorists are Muslim, people have decided not to make that distinction. That saddens me. Its become appalling at the levels of intolerance shown by people who claim themselves to be Christian.
I know I will continue to get emails that make my head explode. I’ve been getting them for years. This one really struck home for me though, specifically because I’m NOT a Christian. I also didn’t think the person I got it from was either. Please, before you knee-jerk forward something, check its validity. If there’s a snopes.com link, actually read it and make sure it supports what you are passing on (this one didn’t in any way, shape or form).
